gnome2
This configuration is not relevant anymore, as GNOME 2 has been removed from most distributions. It could still apply to stuff like MATE and Cinnamon, but let's let it rest here for now.
Note that there's a GNOME 3 doc in desktop.
The Gnome exception
When I don't want to go through the hassle of doing a special configuration, since I don't have time to play around with all this, I just used the default Gnome environment, with a few tweaks:
- i setup 4 workspace, 2x2, named Mail, Web, TTY and IRC (clockwise)
- i use brightside (although it doesn't seem to want to start automatically)
- i installed workrave, thunderbird, quodlibet and gkrellm in adition to the already installed firefox and xchat
- i have quicklinks to the above + the gnome terminal (which I'm getting used to) on the top bar
- i start gkrellm on demand
- i autostart workrave from the session sessions
- i use the keyboard switching applet from gnome, which finally works and switches keyboards when I press shift + alt, but I actually set that to scroll lock, which is much less problematic with beasts like Emacs, for example
- i use the temperature, network-admin, and battery applets
- i use nautilus and I don't like it, but that's life
